Making a Splash

Story and Photo by Christina Hawkins

Last summer, I went with my husband Michael and daughter Hayden, who was then four, to a “secret” private pond in the western part of the state. It has a zip-line, a giant water slide, a little sand beach, and other fun stuff, but the owner asked me not to name the place, for fear of being overrun.

I’m not a professional photographer, but I do have a passion for capturing fun moments and beautiful images [see “Feeding the Fox,” IDAHO magazine, February 2015]. What I love about this picture is that these two didn’t know I was watching them and taking photos. They were having great fun. Hayden was splashing her daddy and, for a while, he took it. I don’t think she expected him to splash her back with such force. The surprised look on my daughter’s face makes this capture hilarious to me.

About Christina Hawkins

Christina Hawkins is a native Idahoan raised in Oregon who has a love for the outdoors and for photographing moments that sometimes go unseen. Her other loves are music, theater, and her “two beautiful daughters who always keep me on track with life.” She figures this quote sums her up: “Life is like a camera. Focus on what’s important, capture the good times, develop from the negatives, and if things don’t work out, take another shot.”
